Yes, I know how cheesy that sounds. Nonetheless, a few of my best friends are studying abroad this semester, all having left within the past couple of days. Their excitement for an unfamiliar place and forthcoming adventures must be contagious because our other friends and I seem to have been filled with the same positive energy. It's invigorating. This past semester was really tough on everyone, mentally and emotionally. I swear, it's something in the stars.

Usually at the beginning of a new year I don't feel anything out of the ordinary. There's no cleansing period, no moment of clarity. Everything is just hum-drum and blah. However, this year is different. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's there.

It's just going to be a <strike>good</strike> great year and I can feel it. That is all.

The first 2 were taken at Doi Suthep, which is at the top of a mountain in the city. Since Chiang Mai is completely surrounded by mountains, it's the only light you can see in the sky (aside from the stars of course) and it looks so cool. The story of the temple is (and i don't have all the details 100% correct) there was an elephant carrying bone relics of the Buddha a long, long time ago. He dropped it by accident, and one small piece fell off in the city of Chiang Mai, where Wat Suan Dohk was built; the larger piece was then carried up to the top of the mountain by the elephant. Once he reached the top, he just fell over and died, and they built Doi Suthep in that spot. the other 2 pictures were taken at a wat in a forest (I forget the name of it). The broken statues were in the Buddha graveyard, where people bring their old and worn Buddha statues instead of throwing them away.

It's an ancient temple that apparently only like 20 people have climbed in the past 15 years or so- well, climbed the ancient stairs, which is extremely hard because they're made of giant stones and it's really steep; most people tend to use another stairway that was built later on that is probably 10 times easier (we didn't see it). The monk in these pictures, Rainie, traveled with us for the day. Our resident director Chhunny used to be a monk and he knew him from when they lived in Thailand and stayed at the same temple.

We went to many different temples, going around Cambodia for 14+hours. It was exhausting but so interesting. We were in what is thought to be the most ancient city in Southeast Asia, which I'm pretty sure is called Angkor Borei (i know it begins with a B). Apparently in ancient Chinese scripts the hub of ancient Asia was described as an island, so originally it was thought to be in Vietnam, I believe, but then historians realized it was actually in Cambodia because during the flood season this area basically turns into an island.

The first couple were taken when we stopped in some random village town outside of Phnom Penh to see the Mekong and see where all the veggies and other produce came from; the last couple of pictures were taken at a Lotus farm, which was also the site for an ancient Cambodian village. the kid in the last picture went and picked some lotus flowers for us to eat. Cambodians really like them, but unfortunately i wasn't really fond of it. it kind of just tasted like plants and dirt.

and now i'm babbling again. blaahhhh.

i meant to upload some of my pictures from Camp Bisco, but i haven't done it yet. blahh. maybe i'll do it now. it's a really lazy day, but not really. i think i'm just in a really fickle mood. i need to stop babbling. trains of thought are quite amusing, if you stop to think about it.

ha okay. blahh.libra8822http://www.blogger.com/profile/12264571800808942129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8420865068713446128.post-45890514176409751102011-06-11T16:12:00.000-07:002011-06-11T16:12:50.742-07:00It's a rainy day & I'm feeling like a homebody......so I took the liberty to practice my "photography" (I don't call it actual photography, since i haven't taken a class yet, so i'm still just a newborn.) but, yeah. i really want to try doing some really funky photoshoots with my friends, but i've never done posed shoots before (except a little for molli's blog, http://alamerri.blogspot.com/ , but that's different). So this is me just testing the waters, see what kind of eye I have and all that jazz. blahhh. so i guess let me know what you think?
I forgot how boring this town is. It's so odd. It was nice at first, being able to see my family and friends, but now it's just really boring. I almost forgot why I left this town in the first place- the first time to go to school in NYC; the second to study abroad in SEA.

Before, it used to get me down and I'd feel like I was stuck here. Now, however, it motivates me. I'm hoping to get at least 2 jobs this summer so I can work hard and make a lot of money, which I'll save up towards getting the heck out of here haha. During the school year I'll be renting a house with one of my best friends, Anna. I'm hoping to be able to keep one or 2 jobs while I study and just work my butt off at school to increase my GPA.

Being in Cambodia inspired me a lot to work harder in school. The students there have so much determination to succeed and do well, it made me feel lazy. These people go to 2 or 3 universities in order to major in multiple things, not to mention many of them work 1 or 2 jobs aside from that to help their families with money. And they are always so friendly and eager to help and do things. It's understandable why they're like that, considering the Khmer Rouge killed off all of the educated in the 70's, and it's great that this new generation is working toward something so special- to make Cambodia a wonderful place in the eyes of international countries, not just an ailing, grief-stricken, impoverished nation. I love that about them, and I miss my friends there so much.

It's raining right now. Ah, so peaceful. It was thundering on and off all day. Apparently it rained earlier, too, but I missed that. I don't know why, but for some reason I've been so tired the past couple of days. Not in a depressed kind of way, by any means, just tired. It could be because I never gave myself a chance to recover from jet lag. I thought I had manipulated my body's sleep cycle on the way back to this side of the world by trying to sync it with the time here, but maybe I didn't afterall. I've been taking naps, which is abnormal. I blame it on Southeast Asia. I never was a frequent napper before going there, but the heat gets the best of you and sometimes all you really need is a nice snooze midday. My problem right now is that i take them around 4 or 5 and don't wake up until around 7 or 8 hahaha. Oh, man. I think things will change once I get a job (hopefully that will be soon) so I can have a routine to my life.

Blahh blah blahhhhh.

Nothing else to ramble about. I'm gonna go try to watch the 'Virgin Suicides' online. Hopefully it's done loading. I really need to get Netflix. Which means I really need a job ;) lol

anywho.
byeee.
My flight from Heathrow to Logan was delayed about 6 hours due to engine malfunctioning. Just as the plane was about to lift off from the ground, there was a loud bang and a big blow of fire shot out really fast from the round thing hangin' from the wing (i saw it because I was sitting at a window seat really close to the wing). They kept telling us that the plane was going to go under maintenance, then they said we had to switch planes. Which ended up taking hours, even though they said it would be "very soon". I know they were trying their hardest to fix the issue, I just wish they could have let us know how long it would be. They had to transport all the cargo & all the food and the crew and everything. I was able to watch an episode of Blue Bloods, all of Due Date (which was hilarious!) and an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Plus have some time to sit around, do nothing, and listen to my ipod.

We finally reached Boston, and everyone was ecstatic, giving the crew a round of applause. We all went through the passport business, and then went to baggage claim. To my exhausted (yet somewhat expectant) surprise, my both pieces of my luggage were not there. Apparently they had never even been loaded onto the plane. I had a bad feeling about my luggage because there was some issue with it while I was transferring flights in Mumbai, but (and I feel bad saying this) I couldn't understand what the guys who were taking care of it were saying. I was waiting to get my boarding pass for 2 hours, and a bunch of guys were running around all over the place with my passport and flight info, and saying they were transporting my bags from my Thai Airways plane to the Jet Airways plane. I have no idea what was happening, but I'm wondering if Thai Airways never even shipped my luggage? So now I have to wait to get it sent to my dad's house in RI. ahh, well. I'm not too upset about it now because it happened when I was going to Thailand, too, so I know I'll at least be getting it. I did cry a little, however, because I was so worn out, at the time a little upset about the luggage thing, and no one was there to meet me at the airport because my flight was delayed (my brother had gone at 1 only to find out the flight wasn't coming until 6:45, and then he had to go move into his new place for the summer at the time I was supposed to be picked up). So yeahhhh. But everything's fine now. I'm getting a train back to RI in about an hour and a half & it'll feel so good to take a shower and put on clothes that I haven't been wearing for the past 3 days! hahah

But it feels so strange being back here. On the one hand it feels like I never left, but on the other....it feels different. In a good way. I feel like a stronger person, as silly as that sounds. I like this weird feeling haha.libra8822http://www.blogger.com/profile/12264571800808942129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8420865068713446128.post-71957517107322637872011-05-21T03:00:00.000-07:002011-05-21T03:00:26.503-07:00AHHH!!!!Currently, I am waiting at Gate D4 in the Suvabharmi (sp?) airport in Bangkok. I've been here since about 11. My friend Natalie and I have been chillin out here all day, but she just got on her connecting flight to Taipei. From there she goes to California, then to Dallas. I'll be heading to India, where I have a 5 hour layover, then to London, where I'll have another 5 hour layover, then back to Boston.
So scary!
I feel out of my body right now. It's so hard to believe these 5 months are over. It felt like this day would never come. AHHHoihfsoidhfsidhfsd. I'm so nervous!!! D:libra8822http://www.blogger.com/profile/12264571800808942129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8420865068713446128.post-24343036875502347752011-05-18T08:25:00.000-07:002011-05-18T08:25:06.001-07:005, 4, 3, 2...I'm getting into a new band lately. Well, I they're probably not new, but my friend introduced them to me a couple of days ago. Noah and the Whale. They're sooo gooooood! Deliciously mellow. (that was cheesy).

Less than 3 days left until we depart from Cambodia. That's an extremely scary thought. On the one hand, I feel ready to go back to the real world and face my life, but on the other....it's just so bizarre. Southeast Asia is wonderfully strange, and I feel so comfortable here. I don't know. I love it.

Coming here was the best decision I've ever made in my life. And the healthiest. I'm not sure what would have happened if it didn't happen, and I'm not so sure I want to know. But I feel like a changed person. Who knows if anyone else notices it, or will notice when I get back. I hope my family does. And my friends, but mostly my family. I feel like I've grown up, even if it's just a little. I hope they appreciate me more as an adult, not to sound melancholy. My glass is half full now, rather than half empty.

The future is exciting. Can't wait to see what's in store.
:).

There's nothing else really that comes to mind for me to write, so I'll leave you now.

Byyeeee!
It's very weird. I feel like we've been on a completely different planet for the past week, rather than a different province about 6 hours from our current home. This has been one of the longest, most tiring, yet best times I have experienced so far in this trip. Cambodia is very draining to those who aren't accustomed to the lifestyle, but it's so worth it. I haven't yet been able to put my finger on what's so attractive about it. Hopefully these last 3 weeks will present me with some kind of answer.

The first 3 days were spent at Koh Pdao, an island village in the middle of the Mekong, in Kratie province. Out of the 3 villages my friends and I have stayed in during our study abroad in Southeast Asia (the other 2 were in Thailand), Koh Pdao was the most comfortable. It was extremely different, too, in the sense that they didn't drink- at least while we were there- and all they did was workworkwork. Cambodians have got to be the hardest working people I have ever met in my life. It makes me feel extremely lazy. We helped move fence posts 2 mornings in a row, that were basically 70 pound tree trunks that were about 4 or 5 feet tall. We all had trouble finishing more than 4 or 5 total, but they just worked all day doing it! And they're so happy while they work, too. They were joking around with us, we ate mangos, and even taught them the hokey pokey hahaha. We also had to ride bikes if we wanted to go anywhere along the strip of their village. Each ride was at least a couple of miles long, but it was so hard to do since none of us are really used to biking on REALLY bumpy roads, and (I hate to sound whiney about this) the bikes were too small....But it was fun nonetheless! The first trek we had was probably about 6 miles total (that's just a guesstimate, it felt like 20 miles hahah) and we felt so drained after, but in the coming days we had shorter bike rides and they got so much easier to handle (and not because they were short). I don't know. I'm rambling now.

Siem Reap was cool, although we only spent a couple of days here. The first day we just took it easy since everyone was wearing thin- people were getting sick as a result of being in the village, which is to be expected, not to mention we were all covered in an excessive amount of mosquito bites. Yesterday, we took the day to explore Angkor Wat, which was beautiful. We saw the "mudroom" of it, the main temple, the "snake temple" (where Tomb Raider was filmed), and the "face temple". Each of them was so unique and amazing. It's hard to imagine they were once the hub of ancient Angkor era life and that they've lasted this long. Many people consider it the "8th Wonder of the World" and after being, it's completely understandable why.

My computer is about to die, however, so I must depart. When I get home later, I'll try to post some pictures from our adventure.

Cheerio,

Okay, well at this moment in time I'm sitting on the tan leather couch in my temporary home- an apartment in downtown Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I've lived here since March 26 with 4 other girls, and will be here until May 21. We're part of an experimental study abroad program that brought us to Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for the first 3 months of this semester, courtesy of the Education Abroad Network.

It's so weird to think that I just spent so long on the opposite side of the world (I'm originally from little ol' Rhode Island, in the USA) and now it just seems like a memory. I blinked and it was gone. But this semester has been one of the best times in my life, if not the best. It sounds so cheesy, but I do feel like I've grown as a person. It was very gradual in Thailand, but it's faster now. Have you ever had an experience where you can literally feel yourself metamorphosing? It feels great. When I started off in Southeast Asia, I'll admit that I was a bit frazzled and lost, to say the least. The normal anxiety that everyone feels had gotten the best of me and I was simply overwhelmed with life. My goal for coming to Asia was to have a sort of "therapy", so to speak- I needed to stop smoking weed, for one thing, which had gotten completely out of hand, for various reasons. My mind, body, and spirit needed to breathe, and, though I love them dearly, I needed a break from my family, too. The past year had brought stresses and tests to us all, which I became overly sensitive to. My dad, but especially my brothers, would give me advice on things I should do, yet I would take offense to it, rather than think they were trying to help. I'm going to have to figure out some way to put my tail between my legs and tell them they were right hahaha.

Hmm...
It seems as if my writing has used a lot of "I"'s and "me"'s, which I hate doing. Sorry if it sounds very self-absorbed. My thoughts are just being gathered and thrown on this webpage randomly. Blah.

I'm not really sure what the point of this blog is going to be, except for the above-mentioned: gathering my thoughts. In high school I used to manage them by writing in a journal. For some reason the movement of my hand writing the script with a nice black pen was very zen for me. But now I can't bring myself to do that. I have absolutely no clue why. Have you noticed that while growing up and out of high school, you're interests change? It might not be everyone, but I have met a few other people who have felt that way. I used to be a bit of a homebody and loooooved to read books. I would spend all day reading a book, losing sleep even if I had to wake up early for school in the morning. Thinking back on it, it's crazy that I did that so often, yet I was so passionate about it. Books are what made me want to be a film maker. Now, however, I haven't read a book thoroughly since...well, I don't even remember the last time. Sad, huh? I have this theory that it's only because I haven't found what I'm interested in reading nowadays. I used to love fiction stories, ones that I could relate to in high school, especially those written by Sarah Dessen. Being in Cambodia has helped me rediscover what I like though, and that involves cultures (anthropology), people (sociology), languages (Khmer, Thai- we had to take lessons in both in their relative countries), and history, which I never in a million years thought I would be into. Maybe it's just because the history they teach you in high school is just so....boring. The history of culture that I've been taught here is fascinating! I think it's always how it's taught- we've been brought on these hardcore treks to various ancient cities around Cambodia that are so interesting. There's one place that our professor, Dr. Kyle Latinis, brought us to which is an archaeological site that he discovered. When he took us there we were able to dig up a few bones and pottery sherds dating back as far as 500-1000 BC. Sick, huh?

Today we are going on a 9 day field trip around various parts of Cambodia. The first stop is a village homestay in the province of, I think, Kratie (?). Afterward we'll head to Siem Reap to see the infamous Angkor Wat, then Battambang, and I'm not really sure where else. The thing about Southeast Asia is that there's never a set schedule for anything. It's refreshing in a way, because it leaves room for alterations, yet it can get annoying because you can never get a straight answer when trying to plan things out. It's a bit comical, actually. I think it's all due to the Buddhism influence, and the idea of impermanence. Asians are very attune that nothing is absolute in life except for the fact that it changes at a very rapid pace and doesn't wait for anyone. It's a good wake up call.

Anywho, after all my ramblings, I must depart. It's 9:19 AM and we're leaving at 10:30 and I'm still sitting around in my pajamas. I haven't even finished my cup of mediocre coffee (Cambodia is not famous for their coffee, let me just say).

Choom reap leeah! (See you later)
